Why invest in REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC)?

August 20th, 2010

Why invest in RPAC?

When 54,000 New York REALTOR members support/oppose a measure in Albany, it’s difficult for our elected leaders to ignore that cry.

By investing in RPAC you help to protect the interests of the real estate industry and private property owners.
In 2008As a result of persistent REALTOR grassroots advocacy efforts and the support of REALTOR friendly law makers, two of NYSAR’s top priority bills were signed into law in 2008:

The NYSAR-supported Commission Escrow Act – ensuring better legal protections for earned but unpaid commissions, effective January 1, 2009.
>
The measure to ban all sex offenders from holding or obtaining a real estate license, effective August 2008.
>
> Another key success for New York’s REALTORS was the passage of legislation to make the New York Property Insurance Underwriting Association (NYPIUA) permanent. NYPIUA is a property insurer of last resort used in the state’s coastal areas, effective June 2008.
>
> Protecting REALTOR LivelihoodNYSAR and RPAC also made great strides defeating the following proposals that would have attacked the livelihood of New York REALTORS across the state:
>
> A proposal that would have required brokers to verify zoning compliance of their listings.

> A proposal that would have required real estate agents to provide a potential purchaser of real property that is served by a private well with educational materials provided by the NYS Department of Health.

> A proposal that would have restricted a broker’s business area to the county in which they reside or have an office.

> A proposal that would have extended the agriculture district notice to buyers of real property located within 500 feet of the boundary of an agricultural district.

> Key Issues NYSAR and Your RPAC Dollars are Targeting in 2010:
>

> Fighting an unnecessary proposal to increase state wetlands oversight.

> Fighting for property tax reform and relief.

> Opposing legislation that would require a home “loan counseling disclosure notice” be provided by real estate brokers at the time of contract for the sale of commercial or residential property.

> Supporting legislation to make revisions to agency disclosure requirements.

> Supporting legislation to improve and streamline the property condition disclosure statement.

> Fighting a proposal to impose the mortgage recording tax on cooperative housing transactions.

> Fighting a new legislative proposal that would prohibit “exclusive” brokerage agreements between brokers and sellers of residential housing within New York City.

> Improving access to affordable health care for all New York REALTORS.

> Fighting against mortgage recording taxes and transfer taxes on a local and statewide level.

> RPAC on the National Level: RPAC has made significant strides on the National level, including the most recent accomplishment in the fight to keep banks out of real estate. President Barack Obama recently signed into law a bill that included NAR’s “Community in Choice Real Estate Act,” which permanently bans national banks from engaging in real estate brokerage and property management.Additional Issues RPAC is Advocating for in Washington include:
>
> Protecting the deductibility of home mortgage interest and local property taxes.

> Ensuring viability and liquidity at Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac.
> Fighting for health insurance for REALTORS.

August 18th, 2010

Linda F. Smith, SIBOR director of membership and coordinator of the organization’s ‘Pack to School’ program, prepares to fill backpacks with classroom items.

More than 800 students at PS 44 in Mariner’s Harbor will be starting the new school year with an essential assortment of brand new classroom supplies thanks to the Staten Island Board of Realtors (SIBOR) Pack To School program.

Through the annual initiative, now in its eighth year, SIBOR has donated thousands of backpacks stocked with notebooks, a ruler, crayons, markers, folders, glue sticks, pencils and a pencil box to Island school children.

“SIBOR’s Pack to School program is a wonderful campaign that supports Staten Island’s most precious asset: Our Children,” said Linda F. Smith, SIBOR director of membership and coordinator of the school-supply effort.

REALTOR VOLUNTEERS

Pioneer Bus Co. will once again assist with delivery — and Realtor volunteers from across the Island will spend a morning personally distributing backpacks to each and every PS 44 student.

MORE TO COME

SIBOR’s involvement with the selected school continues throughout the year. The students are invited to create holiday cards for seniors in care facilities as part of SIBOR’s Adopt-A-Senior project in December.

Two fifth-grade students selected by the principal are recognized for their outstanding performance at SIBOR’s annual Top Producer Awards luncheon in the spring.

Those who’d like to make a donation, or learn more about Pack to School, should contact Ms. Smith, at 718-979-0007, extension 1517.

Donations may be dropped off at SIBOR’s office at 1535 Richmond Ave., Graniteville.

Fannie Mae Launches ‘Know Your Options™’ Online Resource to Educate Struggling Homeowners

August 16th, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC — Fannie Mae (FNMA/OTC) has announced the launch of KnowYourOptions.com, a new consumer education Web site that outlines the choices available to homeowners who are struggling with their mortgage payments, and provides guidance on how they can contact and work with their mortgage company to find solutions.

The online resource, which offers reliable and easy-to-understand information in both English and Spanish, expands on Fannie Mae’s ongoing efforts to help struggling borrowers find alternatives to foreclosure.

“Through foreclosure prevention programs, borrower outreach, underwriting guidelines and servicer engagement, Fannie Mae is taking a comprehensive approach to helping struggling borrowers,” said Jeff Hayward, Senior Vice President, Fannie Mae’s National Servicing Organization. “Identifying accurate resources and finding the right answers can be a difficult challenge for borrowers facing hardship and a flurry of disparate, incomplete and sometimes fraudulent information. Know Your Options™ is the company’s newest effort to reach distressed homeowners and is designed to bring the best information and guidance together in one place so that struggling borrowers can focus on finding solutions that work for their particular circumstances.”

KEY FEATURES OF KnowYourOptions.com include:

Interactive Options Finder to help homeowners identify options that might be right for their situation; alculators to help borrowers understand how many of the options work, including refinance, repayment, forbearance, and modification; videos featuring real homeowners discussing how they received help and housing counselors providing advice; a virtual assistant to walk homeowners through key areas of the site; and next steps and helpful forms, including a financial checklist and contact log to help borrowers be prepared when contacting their mortgage company or housing counselor.

FORECLOSURE ALTERNATIVES

For homeowners who are having trouble paying their mortgage, but want to stay in their homes, KnowYourOptions.com provides information on refinancing, repayment plans, forbearance, modifications and Deed-for-Lease™.

For homeowners who recognize that they can no longer afford their mortgages, but want to avoid having a foreclosure on their credit history, the site provides information on alternatives including short sales and deeds-in-lieu.

“There are different answers for different situations and this site can be an important tool in the toolbox for borrowers trying to do the right thing,” Hayward continued. “This initiative draws on the insights and feedback garnered through Fannie Mae’s work with thousands of lender partners and housing counselors across the country, and will help connect borrowers with the servicing and counseling professionals they need to reach resolution. Our hope is that this site can be a trusted source of free information for borrowers and industry participants alike.”

The company plans to implement a comprehensive marketing outreach campaign to raise awareness about the site, and also intends to use the site as a vehicle to roll out new options for borrowers that are currently being developed.
